18 to present creations at 'green' event

nst_logo2011/10/29, New Sunday Times - THE Anugerah Hijau 2011 competition will culminate in a judging and awarding ceremony today at Dewan Tunku Canselor Universiti Malaya.

The competition, which has boiled down to 18 finalists in two categories -- Totally Active (green short films/videos) and Wildly Creative (sustainable fashion design) -- will see the youths vying with each other to become the 2011 champions.

For the Totally Active category, there are eight finalists who will compete for the "Best Green Video" award.

Among the judges are Lara Ariffin from Novista Sdn Bhd and Yasmin Rasyid from EcoKnights.

In the Wildly Creative category, there are ten finalists and individuals striving for the "Best Sustainable Fashion Design" award.

Their clothes' design is required to contain 70 per cent of materials from everyday discarded items like old cloths, shoelaces, plastic and so forth.

The judges for this category are Dr Zeeda Fatimah Mohamad from Universiti Malaya Cares, MIFA 2010 winner Silas Liew, Daren Lee from Move Productions and Tengku Chanela Jamidah from Ultra Creatives, a sustainable fashion label.

The Anugerah Hijau 2011 award ceremony will begin at 2pm.

Wildly Creative finalists will parade their creations in a professionally-choreographed eco-fashion show, which is organised by Daren Lee from Move Productions.

Sophia Ang, the creative director of Mode Make Up Academy, will provide the matching hairstyle and make-up to the clothes.

All members of the public are welcome to attend the award ceremony.

Entrance is free and seats are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Carpooling services are also provided to the venue. Those keen to carpool can log on to www.morction.com.

The Anugerah Hijau competition is organised by EcoKnights and supported by the CIMB Foundation, Shell Sustainable Development Grants, the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, Yuber, Malaysian Productivity Corporation and bioHome (Lam Soon Products).

Anugerah Hijau is also a non-profit environmental education effort designed to challenge today's youth to take environmental efforts a notch higher by playing a proactive role in society through creative tools.
