Meet your Anugerah Hijau Ambassador – SARI YANTI

Sari YantiSari Yanti

Sari Yanti is no newcomer to the local film making industry. You may probably know her more as "Kaisarah" - the lead character she played in a popular local drama series, Kisah Kaisarah. Yet, this petite and talented celebrity has a soft and green side too – a side which has become deeply held and embraced by other local celebrities as well.

Ever since EcoKnights was established, Sari - now a wife and a mother, and also a full time actor and host of TV9's Choop! – has been one of the organisation's strong supporters. She has personally assisted in the Eco Film Festival and now, Anugerah Hijau.

"I love the environment and my hometown, Kuala Pilah, is one of the greenest places in the country. So I am exposed to the natural and suburban environment and it gives a sense of serenity. In the city, life is different yet staying true to my roots, I still make sure that my home is green and now with a baby, it is even more important to make sure that he grows up in a healthy environment. You hear of so many environmental issues that affects human health – from H1N1 to water-borne diseases. That's why it's important to be green conscious – no matter in the city or in the kampong. If our environment is not conserved and protected, at some point, us humans will fall prey to our daily actions", explains Sari, as she is more commonly known.

"The best and easiest way to do this is to start with knowledge. And what better way to start if not in school or in college", added Sari.

Sari's involvement with EcoKnights and their efforts started when Sari was exposed to Anugerah Hijau's first competition in 2008. She was excited to learn that there are so many efforts out there initiated by environmental NGOs and was keen to lend a helping hand. When EcoKnights President, Yasmin Rasyid, approached here, she did not hesitate a bit and agreed to be part of this youth programme.

"I have seen the evolution of Anugerah Hijau and it does make me feel like I wished I had this kind of environmental education programme during my time so that today, I can be a better person for nature and most importantly of all, teach my children early", adds Sari.

"But it's never too late of course," she added.

Understanding the need to support grassroots organisations and early education for youths about the environment, Sari Yanti is the official AMBASSADOR for Anugerah Hijau.

"I hope that by being an ambassador, I can develop a better green consciousness among the youths and children of the future generation. Supporting Anugerah Hijau and EcoKnights is my avocation to champion a green cause", concluded Sari.

As an ambassador, Sari will be making an appearance during the workshop for the finalists in July and will also be joining some of the youths in learning a bit about film making and also sustainable fashion design. Sari is also one of the judges in the judging panel alongside Anugerah Hijau mentors, film maker Lara Ariffin and fashion designer Silas Liew.

While international environmental issues draw continued attention, many local Malaysian celebrities are now placing environmental issues at the top of their list of priorities. Issues like global warming, population growth, deforestation, and the continued loss of many species of plants and animals have reached increasing prominence on the environmental agenda.
